Why am I in Development? (Andrew W)

March 2, 2010

To drive around in a big white 4×4, sip cocktails in bars, carouse with diplomats and swim in hotel pools. Oh, and to have moral superiority over my friends at home.

Luckily I’m still young enough, idealistic enough and early enough in my career to believe that isn’t true. It sits rather uncomfortably with everything I’ve learnt so far, yet so many UN, NGO and donor workers do live like that. I believe that I won’t –but people should be judged by their actions and not their words, so only time will tell.

I got involved in development because I could never – and still cannot – understand how such great inequality can continue to persevere in the world we live. A desire to stop global inequality, eh? Pretty clichéd I hear almost everyone scream reading this. Clichéd it is, but at some level I believe you need to feel that sense of injustice, why else would you be in development?

… did I mention the pool?

If only it were white
